Chapter 4: The Woods
After 8th period, I met Stephanie under a looming oak tree. She had earphones on and had slung her backpack onto a tree branch. As soon as she noticed me, she quickly pulled them out. "Hi," she breathed out. "Emma, right?" I nodded in agreement. "Ok," she whispered. "Come with me."
She led me to a pathway not far behind the east wing of the school. "Where does this lead?" I questioned her. "Into the woods." was her reply. "But I thought you were showing me-" "SHH! she interrupted. "We need to keep quiet. I managed a gulp and stared around us. We were walking fast enough for me to only catch a glimpse of the trees and foliage around us. Suddenly, she stopped and a bumped into her. "Oof," the air went out of me like a balloon.
She motioned to a fork in the path in front of us. "Fang told me to go right." Stephanie muttered, then quickly jogged right. I followed her with a puzzling look on my face. "Fang?" I whispered. "Who's that?" "I have no time for questions," Stephanie said, louder this time. "We have to go now! Before the moon's up."
"And why's that? I asked. "Because!" Stephanie said, a hint of tension in her voice. "You'll see soon enough." And with that, she sprinted off the path and into the trees.
"STEPHANIE?!" I called out to her. No answer followed my plead and I was left hanging. This must be a dream, I thought. Like that fur-enveloped hand. It must be fake. I mean, moon? What was Stephanie thinking?
That reminded me of the hand I saw. What could it be? If it even was here in the woods, I'd be here with it...... My thoughts trailed off to fear tightening in my throat. I was lost! What could happen next? Where's Stephanie!? The questions swirled around my head in a frenzy. I swayed for a bit, then regained my balance. I've got to get out.
That was my last thought when I went unconsciousness.
I woke up in some sort of clearing. Had Stephanie moved me? I thought. Or am I just hallucinating?
I spit the taste of sleep out of my mouth then sat up. That's when the blurry figures in front of me turned to sharp, clear vision. They were werewolves.
